You Can’t Fix What You Don’t Look At: Acknowledging Race in Addressing Racial Discipline Disparities
Discipline Disparities: A Research-to-Practice Collaborative
Recent national tragedies—the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Rice keep issues of race at the forefront of our national consciousness. As much as we try to look away from the issues created by the idea and social/material realities of race in America, events remind us time and time again that our society’s racial dividing lines, especially those involving Black males, can have serious,
even deadly consequences. Those divisions and their consequences extend beyond the streets into most of our institutions—including schools, where many current disciplinary, suspension, and expulsion practices exacerbate inequality and perpetuate a widening chasm among different racial and ethnic groups.
