- Philadelphia County has a total of 75 public school districts, and consists of 339 schools (274 of which are in the School District of Philadelphia) serving over 250,000 students.
- SJP Initiatives: Development of a multi-system Diversion Program aimed at
(1) dramatically reduce the number of children arrested and referred to the juvenile justice system (2) eliminate the racial and ethnic disparity of those students who are arrested, suspended and expelled, and (3) sustain and expand a shared framework to help all students succeed. - Lead Judge: Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel.
Spotlight on Philadelphia County School-Justice Collaboration
The School Diversion Program was developed by the Philadelphia Police Department in recognition of the growing problem of the school-to-prison pipeline, and its disproportionate impact on minority students which has the potential of becoming a national model. Kevin Bethel leads the program, and represents a shared vision amongst system partners to address these issues.
